The design's unique properties lie in its material - cork. Not only is cork completely recyclable and reusable, but it also doesn't contribute to environmental pollution even if discarded. This makes it one of the most used materials worldwide, covering the largest industrial chains among all materials. The cork used in "A Slice Of Tool" can be repurposed to make floors, wall panels, and thermal insulation materials, highlighting its versatility.
The design of "A Slice Of Tool" is realized using a combination of cork, ABS, acrylic, and magnets. The exterior is designed using a 1:2 proportion, with magnetic adsorption used for assembly. The design includes a triangle hole for easy carrying and layered storage grooves for easy organization. Each product can be customized with additional magnets or box coverings, catering to individual needs.
The tool set includes up to 36 kinds of exquisite screw tools, all magnetically fixed to the storage box for easy access. The design also includes a stationery set, a financial management tool with a calculator and note function, and environmentally friendly tableware. The design's functionality extends to electronic products, with the cork's properties aiding in achieving excellent coating results and durability.
The design was realized in Taiwan between September 2018 and January 2019. The project faced several challenges, particularly in utilizing cork, a material known for its lightness, water resistance, elasticity, compressibility, heat and sound insulation, flame retardance, and high wear resistance. Despite these challenges, the design team, which included Pei-Hung Lin, Yi-Jie Tsai, Zhi-Ning Zhang, Jun-Xian Siao, Chen-Che Tsai, and Instructor Ray Teng Pai, successfully brought the design to life.
"A Slice Of Tool" has been recognized for its innovation and design excellence, winning the Silver A' Art and Stationery Supplies Design Award in 2019. This award is given to designs that showcase outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
